R3 5512 1/2 — 3-Flute Replaceable Insert Surface Planer, 55mm Cutting Diameter
Part No: R3 5512 1/2 | Barcode: 9314350014732 | Product Group: R760
The Carbitool R3 5512 1/2 is a professional-grade 3-flute surface planing bit built for router sled slab milling and CNC spoilboard levelling. Three 4-sided 12×12×1.5mm replaceable carbide inserts mean you rotate a fresh edge or swap inserts in seconds — no replacing the whole body. A 55mm cutting diameter covers ground fast while the 1/2″ shank keeps it solid in full-size routers.
Suitable For
Key Features & Benefits
- Replaceable 4-sided carbide inserts — each insert has four usable cutting edges; rotate to a fresh edge when one dulls, replace only the inserts when all four are spent. Running cost is a fraction of a solid-body bit.
- 3-flute geometry — three evenly spaced cutting inserts distribute the load, reduce vibration, and produce a smoother surface finish compared to single- or double-flute alternatives.
- 55mm cutting diameter — wide enough to cover serious ground on slab flattening passes without bogging down a full-size router, balanced for stability at working speeds.
- 12mm cut depth capacity — handles typical flattening passes on live edge slabs and high spots on spoilboards without needing multiple bit changes.
- 1/2″ shank — full-size collet fitment maximises grip, reduces runout, and is mandatory for a bit of this diameter. Not suitable for 1/4″ trim routers.
- 78mm overall length — compact profile keeps the bit close to the collet for maximum rigidity and reduced chatter on wide passes.
- PL 12 12 1.5 insert standard — uses a common 12×12×1.5mm square carbide insert, readily available as a separate replacement (see Carbitool insert range).
When to Use This Bit
Mount in a full-size fixed-base or plunge router with a 1/2″ collet — this bit is not suitable for compact or trim routers. Use in a securely clamped sled or CNC gantry setup; freehand use is not appropriate for a bit of this diameter.
If you need to flatten smaller panels or work in a router table rather than a sled, consider a smaller-diameter surface planer or a spoilboard surfacing bit more suited to that application.
