When to Use This HSS Hand Tap
Use this tap when cutting accurate threads in tougher engineering metals — mild and tool steels, stainless, cast iron, brass, aluminium and bronze — where carbon-steel taps would dull quickly. The taper lead-in makes it the natural starter tap; follow with the intermediate (second) and bottoming (plug) tap from the same series for blind holes. This particular variant (T3860250) cuts a M2.5×0.45 Bottoming thread.
Pro Tip: Use a quality cutting fluid (Sutton recommends sulphurised oil for steels and a wax stick or kerosene for aluminium) and back the tap off a quarter-turn every one to two full turns to break the chip — this prevents heat build-up and stops the flutes packing up in deeper holes.
