The Sutton D1882381 is a 15/16″ HSS drill with the shank ground down to 12.5mm (1/2") so it fits a standard 13mm drill chuck — lets you drill larger diameter holes than the chuck would normally support, without needing a Morse taper machine. Designed for slow-speed, large-bore work where the cordless drill or pillar drill’s chuck capacity runs out.

- 5xD cut depth capacity — the flute length supports holes up to 5x the drill diameter, sufficient for through-drilling structural plate and bar stock at this size range.
- Designed for slow-speed drilling — sized for use in pillar drills, milling machines, and high-torque cordless drills running at 350 RPM or below. Don’t run at jobber-drill RPM — the larger diameter generates too much heat at high speed.
When to Use This Drill
The Sutton D1882381 (15/16″ reduced shank) is the right choice when the hole diameter exceeds your machine’s chuck capacity but you don’t have access to a Morse taper machine — common when fitting large fasteners, drilling clearance for through-bolts, or fabricating from sheet steel and plate. For drilling on a lathe or large mill, use a Morse taper shank drill from the D115 series instead; for everyday drilling under 13mm, use the parallel-shank D101 jobber range.
Pro Tip: Slow the drill speed right down for large diameters — for 15/16″ in mild steel, target 250–400 RPM with steady feed pressure and cutting fluid. Reduced-shank drills run at jobber speeds (1500+ RPM) burn up the cutting edge in seconds. If your drill press doesn’t have a low gear, this drill is best run in a milling machine or geared head pillar drill where you can drop to under 500 RPM. Heavy steady pressure with low RPM produces clean chips; light pressure at high RPM produces dust and burns the edge.
