The Sutton D1100159 is a 1/16″ long-series drill — longer flute length and overall length than a jobber drill of the same diameter, but not as long as the extra-long D217 reach drills. Designed for deep-hole drilling where the jobber length runs out of flute, but reach isn’t critical.

- Longer flute and OAL than jobber — D110 long-series drills are sized to ANSI B94-11 long-series proportions, giving roughly 50% more flute length and 30-40% more total length than a jobber of the same diameter. Deeper holes without resorting to extra-long extensions.
- Web-thinned 118° point — the chisel edge at the tip is ground thinner than standard, reducing the thrust force needed to start the cut. Important for long-series drills because the longer overhang from the chuck makes the tool more flexible and prone to walking under heavy thrust.
- M2 high-speed steel — standard tool steel for general engineering. Holds an edge through repeated drilling and resharpens easily on a standard drill grinder.
- Bright finish — clean, low-friction surface suited to general drilling. The blue (steam-tempered) variant of the D110 series is preferred for ferrous metals where built-up edge is a problem.
- Parallel shank cut to size — the shank is the same diameter as the cutting flutes, so chuck grip is maximum, important when the long body amplifies any chuck slip.
- ANSI B94-11 standard length — consistent with international long-series drill specs, so collet stops, depth gauges, and tool holders fit without modification.
When to Use This Drill
The Sutton D1100159 (1/16″ long-series) is the right choice for drilling holes deeper than a standard jobber drill’s flute will allow — through-bolting thick steel sections, through-stud cable runs, or any work where the jobber simply doesn’t have enough working length. For really deep holes (over 200mm) step up to the D217 extra-long range; for everyday drilling, use a D101 jobber instead because long-series drills deflect more under hand-held use.
Pro Tip: Hold the chuck as close to the work as possible to minimise the cantilever overhang — long-series drills walk if too much length sticks out of the chuck. Start the hole with the bit pushed deep into the chuck, then loosen and extend as the hole gets deeper. Withdraw the bit every 20-30mm to clear chips from the flutes; long flutes pack chips quickly, especially in stringy materials like aluminium and free-cutting steel.
