Key Features & Benefits

  • Precision-ground 0.55mm cutting diameter — sized to engineering tolerance, not a rounded approximation. Important when the hole has to take a specific pin, axle, or wire.
  • M2 high-speed steel — standard tool steel, easy to resharpen if you have the patience to grind a sub-2mm bit. Holds a usable edge through normal use without picking up burrs.
  • 118° standard point — the conventional general-purpose point, forgiving in soft and medium materials. Acceptable trade-off between centring accuracy and breakage resistance at this size range.
  • DIN 338 jobber length — standard length proportional to diameter, so the flute portion is short enough to be rigid but long enough to clear chips from typical work depths.
  • Parallel shank cut to size — the shank is the same diameter as the cutting flutes, so chuck grip is maximum (important when the part visible above the chuck is only a few millimetres long).
  • Australian-made by Sutton — Australian engineering tolerance and consistent point geometry batch to batch, important when buying micro drills since 0.55mm bits from cheap suppliers often vary +/-0.05mm.

When to Use This Drill

The Sutton D1010055 (0.55mm) is the right drill for any precision work below 2mm — PCB assembly, miniature pivot holes for clockwork, jewellery dowel pins, hand-built model railway track work, and any scratch-built engineering at small scale. For routine drilling above 2mm, use the standard D101 metric range. Below 0.5mm, work in a precision drill press or pin vice; cordless drills don’t have the speed control to avoid snapping bits this size.
Pro Tip: Always run sub-1mm drills at high RPM (10,000+ for 0.5mm) and very light feed pressure — the cutting edge is so short that low RPM produces large chips per revolution, which lever the bit and snap it. A pin vice or rotary tool with a 1/8" collet works better than most cordless drills for 0.55mm work; the sensitivity of feel matters more than torque at this size. Apply a tiny drop of cutting fluid; even brass benefits.
