Key Features & Benefits

  • 60° centre angle — matches dead and live centres so work runs true between centres on the lathe.
  • Combination point + body geometry — drills the pilot hole and 60° countersink in one operation, eliminating walking on hard or scaled surfaces.
  • M2 high-speed steel — holds an edge through repeated centre-spotting in steel and stainless without re-sharpening.
  • Double-ended design — flip the bit when one end dulls; effectively two centre drills in one body.
  • BS 328 / DIN 333 Form A — standardised dimensions interchangeable with any plain-type centre drill in the trade.
  • Sutton Australian-engineered — manufactured to the BS 328 standard with consistent point geometry batch to batch.

When to Use This Centre Drill

The Sutton D1360003 (BS3) is best suited to centre-spotting where the finished hole or shaft turning needs a precise 7/64″ pilot. Use it in the lathe tailstock or on a milling machine before drilling, reaming, or turning between centres. Choose a smaller size for delicate work and miniature shafts; step up to BS5 for larger shafts and heavier work where the centre must support significant load. Match the body diameter to the depth of countersink you want to leave for the live centre.
Pro Tip: Drill in only until the 60° body taper has cut about two-thirds of the way to the full body diameter — not until the pilot bottoms out. This leaves a clean conical seat for the lathe centre with the pilot acting as a relief well; over-drilling buries the live centre on the flat shoulder and the work runs eccentric. For the BS3 size, that is roughly 6.35mm of countersink depth as a reference.
