When to Use This Carbon Hand Tap
Best for one-off and low-volume hand threading in mild steel, brass, aluminium and similar softer metals — typical home workshop, maintenance and restoration jobs. For stainless steel, hardened steels or production tapping, step up to the matching Sutton HSS hand tap from the T-series for far longer edge life. This particular variant (M2251270) cuts a 1/2-12 BSW Intermediate thread.
Pro Tip: Carbon-steel taps tolerate less heat than HSS — keep the cutting speed low when tapping by hand, use a generous wipe of cutting paste or oil and back the tap off every full turn to clear chips. Avoid using carbon taps on stainless steel.
