Sutton M2 HSS button die for cutting external (male) threads on stud, rod and bar. Solid round die fits standard adjustable die stocks and produces clean, accurate threads in steel, brass, aluminium and most engineering metals. This 3/8-18 NPT variant covers the NPT Pipe Threads thread standard — American National Pipe Thread (tapered) — for cutting sealed pipe-fitting threads on imperial pipework.

When to Use This HSS Button Die
Use this button die when you need to cut a fresh external thread onto round stock, studding or a turned-down shaft — fitting the die into a die stock and rotating it over the workpiece. The HSS edge holds up against repeated production threading and tougher materials where carbon dies would dull quickly. This particular variant (M4291715) cuts a 3/8-18 NPT thread.
Pro Tip: Chamfer the leading 1–2 mm of the rod at roughly 30° before starting the die — this gives the cutting edges something to bite into and dramatically reduces the chance of starting a crooked thread. Use cutting fluid liberally and reverse a half-turn for every full turn forward to break the chip.
