The Carbitool T 448 1/2 is a 2-flute carbide-tipped core box router bit with a 3/4″ (19.05mm) radius and 1-1/2″ (38.10mm) cutting diameter. The largest in the carbide-tipped core box series, it is designed for wide, deep coves, fluted mantles, façade panels, and large-scale signage lettering.

- 3/4″ (19.05mm) radius — produces a wide, sweeping semicircular cove profile suited to large architectural timber elements including mantle surrounds, pilasters, and façade panels.
- 1-1/2″ (38.10mm) cutting diameter — the largest in the Carbitool carbide-tipped core box range, covering cove work that smaller bits cannot reach in a single pass.
- 2-flute carbide-tipped construction — provides a good balance of cutting speed and finish quality; longer lasting than HSS in abrasive timbers and MDF.
- 1/2″ shank — the mass and cut forces generated by a 1-1/2″ cutter demand a 1/2″ collet for adequate rigidity; do not use in a 1/4″ shank router.
- Used with template or fence — no bearing is fitted; use the router table fence for straight fluting runs, or a template guide for curved profiles.
When to Use This Bit
Reach for the T 448 1/2 when your project calls for full-width cove profiles on architectural timber: mantle surrounds, pilaster fluting, decorative facade panels, or deep-set signage lettering where smaller radii would require multiple passes to approximate the same curve. For smaller cove work, the series steps down through T 440 1/2 (5/8″ radius), T 432 1/2 (1/2″ radius), T 424 1/2 (3/8″ radius), and smaller. A solid-carbide option (T 408) is also available in the series for the smallest radius work.
Pro Tip: At this diameter, take multiple shallow passes (3–4mm depth increment) rather than one full-depth plunge. Large-diameter core box bits generate significant lateral force; a router speed of 12,000–16,000 RPM with a moderate feed rate will minimise burning and chatter.
